extra{ordinary} – 10 Years On

The Caravan Gallery at Oriel Colwyn - Part of the Northern Eye Photography Festival.

Can you believe it’s been ten years since The Caravan Gallery first rolled out extra{ordinary} – Photographs of Britain?

Back then, Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale crammed more than a hundred of their wonderfully witty, affectionate and downright brilliant photographs into galleries (and of course their iconic mustard-yellow caravan) to show us Britain as we’d never quite looked at it before.

Fast-forward a decade and extra{ordinary} is back — refreshed, re-hung, and every bit as funny, sharp and thought-provoking as ever.

We’re thrilled to welcome it to Oriel Colwyn as part of this year’s Northern Eye Photography Festival.

extra{ordinary} is a love letter to Britain in all its eccentric, everyday glory. Think quirky shopfronts, bizarre public notices, proud community displays, and those little details that make you smile, scratch your head, or both at the same time.

Some of the photos are old favourites you might remember; others feel even more relevant today (funny how some things never change). Together they remind us that beauty, humour and social commentary can be found in the most unexpected corners.

The 10-year anniversary is a perfect excuse to look back, laugh, and ask: what’s changed since then, and what hasn’t? Britain in 2025 is a different place, but The Caravan Gallery’s work proves our quirks, contradictions and creativity are still alive and well.

Jan and Chris are now actively working on the next iteration of extra{ordinary}…. still extra{ordinary}? ….

Come and celebrate ten years of the extra{ordinary} with us at Oriel Colwyn. Whether you’re a photography fan, an admirer of British eccentricities, or just curious to see life through a slightly sideways lens, this is an exhibition that promises plenty of laughs, a bit of nostalgia, and more than a few “that is SO true” moments.

*** The exhibition forms a part of our Northern Eye festival opening events schedule on Friday 3rd October – Come and meet Jan and Chris at a special opening in Oriel Colwyn between 4pm and 6pm. FREE to attend – no ticket required.
